Illegal migration problems in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is facing many problems at present and the country’s system is struggling to cope up with them. One of them, which is immediately serious, and is also the cause of other problems is Illegal Migration.

Illegal Migration to the United Kingdom has increased multifolds in the past decades, and so have the expenses of the UK government, in rehabilitating the migrants who come to the UK illegally. Naturally because the funds that the government has available for each service and facility that the state provides its citizens, and to all the other inhabitants in need are budgeted. In event of unprepared expenses arising from an urgency, there are no funds for the government to fall back on hence the damages. Following which the funds are either diverted or borrowed from other departments or brought in by sources of loans, for expenses that the country needs in urgency, i.e. burden on the taxpayers. As the taxes go high, so does the cost of living.

Illegal Migration does not have a budget that means the country is only prepared for what it has planned for, and any unexpected overload and the system will break down. The law allows certain protection and services to its citizens and the law also has to comply with human rights in place, to protect the rights of everybody. This means the quality of life and services are overburdened and over exhausted in need for protections of illegal migrants.

In the year ending June 2023, there were 52,530 irregular migrants detected entering the UK, up 17% from the year ending June 2022. 85% of these arrived via small boats. The asylum system currently costs £3.6 billion a year and £6 million a day in hotel accommodation. If these trends continued, the Home Office would be spending over £11 billion a year, or £32 million a day, on asylum support by the end of 2026.

What is human migration ?
Human migration is movement of people as an individual or in groups from one country to another where they intend to settle permanently and make their home. Most of the time they move with family members and dependents.

What are the possible reasons for migrating, an overview.
The possible reasons for people legally and illegally migrating to other countries are for better opportunities and quality of life, higher education and work, better health options and family life, to escape social and economic dangers in their home countries, to avoid prosecution from laws, reuniting with family members.

Difference between legal and illegal migrants.
Migrants who come with proper permissions, documentation and  through legal channels are called legal migrants. And those who avoid the designated route of migration due to lack of proper legit documentation and permissions of the concerned immigration authorities are illegal migrants.

Positive impact of legal migration system.
Positive impact of the legal migration system is that the migrants contribute towards the economy of the country with skills they possess and as their arrival is anticipated, all services are ready to accommodate them which eliminates any negative impact on the system. Further it allows the immigration department a fair chance to process an individual’s personal profile for authentication and character checks before entering from the country of origin to the destination, this includes criminal record checks. It prevents illegal human trafficking and people with criminal intentions to enter the United Kingdom.

Negative impact of illegal migration system.
Negative impact of illegal migration is that instead of contributing towards the economy they become a burden on services and the society. Encourages illegal human trafficking and poses a threat of criminal activities like terrorism, increases the chance of crime related activities in various areas and capacity. The immigration department can not be certain about a person’s identity and intentions.
